In a way, we could say that internet marketing is a perpetual race to build your link popularity. Your link popularity, of course, refers to the number of back links pointing to your website. The higher your link popularity, the higher your page rank. And the higher your page rank, the better your website’s position will be in the search engine results pages.

A great way to build up your website’s link popularity is through forum marketing. Quite simply, forum marketing can be broken down into the following steps:

1. Finding a forum, a bulletin board, a message board, a newsgroup, or an online community that is dedicated to the subject that your online business is servicing.
2. Creating an account.
3. Including your website’s link in the signature box allotted to your account.
4. Posting actively in the many discussion threads therein.
5. Building relationships with your fellow forumers.

Forum marketing can offer some distinct benefits for the savvy marketer:

* It could help you brand yourself as an expert in the field. You could do this by sharing pertinent advice to anyone who would post a problem. People will get to read what you have shared, and they’ll immediately think of you as a credible professional. They’ll seek you out for future needs, and will remember the link that is included in your signature box.

* It could help you build relationships with people who could very well be your future customers, or visitors at the very least. Relationships are always better than onetime visits. By befriending people, you’d be assuring yourself of a pool of prospects you could tap into at anytime.

* Most importantly, forum marketing will give you back links – a lot of them – depending on the number of posts you will be able to make. Supposing you make a hundred posts in a hundred different threads. Each thread represents a web page. Your signature box, with your link, with EVERY post that you’ll make. What does this mean? 100 back links for your website, just like that!

But forum marketing isn’t always successful. A lot of internet marketers, in fact, consider this approach as too menial compared to what they feel are meager benefits that could be derived from the same. After all, posting hundreds of posts is no easy task.

But should forum marketing be dismissed altogether?

Most definitely not. The back links it could provide are far too important to simply neglect.

Here are some tips that would help you make the most out of your forum marketing campaign:

* Though quantity seems to be the name of the game, quality should always take precedence. One post can mean more than a thousand messages, in certain situations. If you take time to make one single post absolutely noteworthy, you’d be able to reach more people in a more meaningful way. They’d be in a better position to remember your enterprise.

* Select a forum that is actually active. There are a lot of dormant forums in the World Wide Web. In fact, recent studies show, that of the 1.3 million forums currently live, only around 300,000 have 500 or more members. Posting in a dormant forum will just be a waste of time. It will not be frequently indexed in search engines, hence, your links therein will be useless. And you won’t have anyone to interact with.

* Study the many posts in the forum’s pages. This is instrumental in determining consumer behavior patterns. The members in such forums are your prospects. Each and every one of them is your lead.

* Have fun. Yes, you’re doing it for business, but this shouldn’t mean that you’re not allowed to enjoy yourself in the process. If you have the sense of humor, show it. A forum is the perfect venue for you to express yourself in the virtual world.

Forum marketing is an inexpensive way to establish your business’ prominence. Use it well, and you’ll be reaping its rewards for many, many years to come.
