Your PDF Ebooks Are Being Stolen Right Behind Your Back!

Internet marketing superstars are one in saying that to make it big in online commerce, you MUST have your own product to sell. With your own product, you have full control over the different aspects of the business it could generate. From the price to the distribution to the usage license, you could adjust these factors to sustain the value and enhance the shelf life of your own product.

And among the most popular digital products to sell are eBooks. Ebooks can come in different forms, but the PDF format is the one which is most recommended. PDF files, after all, are easier to prepare and are readable by any operating system and any platform.

Having your own product would involve hosting the same in your own server, generally speaking.

And here lies the problem.

The common practice is to create a sales page for your PDF eBook. Somewhere in your sales page is a payment link. Once your visitors would click on the payment link, they will be taken to your chosen payment processor. Once payment is made, they will be taken back to your website, to a page that is called as the Thank You page. The Thank You page is where, well, you’d get to thank your new customers for their purchase, and where you could do some back selling tactics. The Thank You page is also the place where the download link for your PDF eBook can be found. Your visitors would simply click on the link and the PDF eBook would be transferred to their computers for immediate enjoyment.

But here’s the catch.

People can easily steal your PDF eBooks, even without paying for them!

How?

Try this out…

Go to www.google.com . Select a generic search phrase that is related to popular brands of eBooks. Let’s say, “make money online.” Now run a search with the exact following phrase…

“make money online”filetype:pdf

You’ll be taken to a lot of links that include eBooks originally intended for sale!

While this has no bearing for the ethical person, there are a lot of people in the World Wide Web who are looking for a free ride. And your online business can be victimized by an inherent flaw in search engines.

So how do you protect your PDF files, and consequently, how do you protect your online enterprise? Here are some tips…

* Try to zip your PDF files using WinZip or WinRar. Search engine spiders may be able to crawl through your PDF documents, but they won’t be able to penetrate the encryptions in zipped formats.

* Try to attach not-so-obvious titles to your PDF documents. If your eBook is entitled, and being marketed, as “How To Make Money Online,” don’t name your PDF file as howtomakemoneyonline.pdf . Instead, add some alphanumeric combinations to make it more elusive. The same rule applies in naming your Thank You page file. You can’t simply assign it the name of thankyou.html. That would be a dead giveaway.

* Consider setting up an SSL-secured membership area where you could lead customers from your Thank You page.

* Hire a programmer to create a script that would protect your PDF files from unauthorized downloads.

* Avail of existing programs in the market that cater to this very problem. One such program is DLGuard, which you could check out at www.dlguard.com .

Free access to a product which is supposed to be your bread and butter is tantamount to burglary. The difference with PDF files over the internet is that it’s comparable to leaving your backdoor open. Diligence is the key, and responsive action is the answer.
