Podcasting has become a social phenomenon in such a short time. And as of recent months, podcasts have become powerful and popular marketing tools to deliver business messages to a very wide audience.
And why not?
Podcasts are very easy to create. In fact, everything that you need to create a podcast is already in your system. All you have to purchase, if you don’t have one, is a microphone. Windows Sound Recorder, Windows Media Player, and tools that can be downloaded from the internet for free can be availed of to create professional sounding podcasts.
But why are podcasts enjoying the fame they have today? Aren’t they, technically speaking, old technology? Creating mp3 files for download is something that existed as early as 10 years ago. So why have they suddenly catapulted to worldwide acclaim only recently?
The answer, of course, is the rise in the popularity of portable mp3 players. Mp3 files can now be downloaded and listened to on the go, courtesy of these nifty lil’ gadgets. Podcasts provide a great alternative to the tunes that are downloaded for enjoyment later on.
And the progenitor of portable mp3 players is the Apple iPod. The Apple iPod redefined the word “cool” for this generation. It is this marketing approach that gave birth to the portable mp3 player industry.
But there is a saying that goes something like this: as the tree evolves, so does its fruits.
The iPod has evolved. With the latest incarnation, the iPod Video, the portable device can now play movie files via a serviceable screen. And with 30GB and 60GB of memory space, you can be sure that a lot of movies can be uploaded to its storage.
And a new industry is born, that of portable video players.
What does this mean for the internet marketer who thrives (as he should) on finding new platforms to exploit?
The age of podcasting has now evolved into videocasting. You could create video files which your users can download and sync with their portable video players for viewing, whenever they want, wherever they are.
Before you start thinking that video creation requires some special skills, let me assure you that it doesn’t. You can create videos ever so easily by purchasing a digital video camera which would upload your captures straight to your computer. Or, if circumstances require, you could capture screen movements on your computer via free programs like CamStudio ( www.camstudio.org ). Audio can be recorded via both devices, or you could opt to separate the recording process and conjoin then during editing. You won’t even have to buy an editing software program. Windows come bundled with a Movie Maker, which is more than perfect for the task.
Let’s face it, people will find video presentations more engaging, hence, you can get a better response from them. Soon enough, videocasts will replace podcasts as the dominant portable device fodder for the digital age.
And since the portable video player industry is in its infancy, the usage of videocasts has yet to be exploited. Hop aboard today, and you’ll be one of the first marketers who will be able to utilize this medium to gain exposure for your online business.
The possibilities are endless with videocasts, much as they are with podcasts. You could create special productions, or episodic ones to gain continued patronage. You could make your show entertaining or educational. You could use characters to convey your message, or your could try the omniscient point of view. There are so many things you could opt to do. There are so many way by which you could develop your videocast. And this could only add to the appeal of the medium.
